Out west there are two places that may be as close to an idealized heaven on earth as exist. One is Yosemite, in California, and the second is Zion in Utah. Similar in their nature with a valley floor surrounding by steep thousand foot walls on all sides , each embodies a landscape that is pictured throughout western art as an idealized heaven on earth. While Yosemite is identified by granite monoliths among towering pines, Zion is constructed of sandstone surrounded by high desert sage and cottonwoods. Their colors are equally dissimilar, with Yosemite’s cool blues, greens, and grays a striking opposite of Zions warm reds, yellow, and orange palette. This palette of color is dominating, with the acute rays of the sun carving the walls of Zion into exquisite murals of color just waiting to be explored through the cameras lens ! The 360 degree panorama of Zion makes it a popular destination for the landscape photograph. Steep climbs up Angels Landing or more accessible climbs up Weeping Rock or Emerald Pools provide limitless views of the extraordinary valley. Walk along the Virgin river's meandering stream in the fall and view the beauty of the Colorado Plateau at its most intimate.
Like Yosemite, Zions splendor calls for more telephoto than wide angkle photogrpahy..
